Notes for Richard TRUMAN
(Research):
At Richard & Mary Wise marriage a Sarah Truman was a witness who signed the registration. She could be mother, aunt, sister or sister-in-law of Richard.
There was a Sarah Truman living at 34 Rose St Westminster, with a nephew William, a bootmaker, in 1861 census. Could this be same Sarah? All these Truman’s were recorded as being born in Westminster.

The marriage certificate also states Richard’s father as being John, a labourer. No John Truman (or similar) were found that could be Richard’s father in any census records from 1841-61.

Unfortunately Richard’s death record doesn’t provide any names of his parents. The only possible useful information on this record is that he was born in Kent. The only birth found in the 1830’s for a birth in Kent was a John Richard Trueman (note spelling with an ‘e’) born 4th quarter of 1838, a year later than his age indicated on both marriage and death records. This has been entered as his birth date but a great degree of uncertainty is attached to this.

If the Kent birth is correct there was a Sarah Truman (no ‘e’) living in The Street, Gillingham, Kent together with a son John, aged 2, in 1841 census. This could well be the John Richard Trueman birth registed Medway, Kent 4th quarter, 1838. There is no husband or father recorded on the birth index, however there is a christening record (spelling without ‘e’) which indicates father’s name as Benjamin, not John viz:-
Name: John Richard Truman
Gender: Male
Birth Date: abt 1838 (could be 1837)
Christening Date: 9 Dec 1838
Christening Place: Gillingham, Kent, England
Father's Name: Benjamin Truman
Mother's Name: Sarah

The address given by both Richard & Mary Wise, at the time of their marriage is 14 New Street. The best fit found for this 14, New Street, St Martin In The Fields, Westminster which is recorded as Public house in 1861.
