NameJohn PARKER
Birth Date30 Sep 1790
Birth PlaceWilby, Norfolk, England
MemoLocation and date fit well but source of this birth unknown. A possible alternative is a Jonathan Atmore baptised in King’s Lynn at St Nicholas on 14 Sep 1789 & born on 7 Jun 1789. King’s Lynn is a little remote from his place of marriage however Jonathan’d parents were Jonathan & Mary which bit well with John’s death record parents named as John & Mary. Hopefuuly the source of the Wilby baptism can be found.
Conv Date30 Jul 18223099 Age: 31
Conv PlaceRoudham, Norfolk, England
MemoOPTION 1: - John Parker known as Joseph Parker/John Parker alias Joseph Atmor/Joseph Atmore, a married man with 3 children was tried at Norfolk Assizes on 30 July 1822 and convicted of rape 27th March last at Roudham Norwich on Susan Ripper a little girl about 15 years old , living at Wilby. He was tried by Judge Best: Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: none made.

A subsequent Report of W B Best on 4 individual petitions (Isaac Preston, the prisoner's counsel [x3]; and R F Elwin on behalf of convicted at the 'last' Norfolk Assizes of rape. Evidences supplied by Susan Ripper. There are sworn statements from Charles Buckle [x2], William Mallows and Jaques Randall; Joseph Pyman, farmer and Robert Peck; Stephen Brothers; Mary Ann Tillet, wife of William Tillet; and Mary Lovely, wife of William Lovely; a part printed medical certificate from James Buller; and a covering letter from John Surtees. Grounds for clemency: no rape had been committed and the prisoner was unable to 'procure the testimony' of Mrs Tillet. Because of this doubt about the evidence, his death sentence was changed to transportation for life [John Mullaney]. His native place was Norfolk and his occupation was “Ploughs and makes butter”.
