Census records suggest born circa 1847 and later 1844 but no index found to suit that date with registration Braintree! There is a different JOHN BETTS in the 1871 census with parents Joseph & Mary but this Mary is only 7 years older than John and the 1871 census has Joseph living only with his mother Mary. Perhaps it is the right John but recorded as a son of Joseph incorrectly!
