MemoHer husband John Aitken on Ann's death certificate said she was born in Edinburgh and her mother's maiden name was Margaret McLay. According to 1851 shows Ann born in Dalkeith, Edinburgh and Ann Johnston was baptised on 18 MAY 1834 Lothian Road Associate Congregation, Edinburgh, Midlothian. She had previously been baptised in Polmont on the 10 Apr 1834. It was not uncommon for Christenings to occur in both husband and wife's parishes although in this case it could be the parishes where she lived and where her parents lived. MemoJohn Aitken, wife, 3 daughters and 1 son who arrived on the Silistria (Captain: J McKay) as assisted passengers. The Silistra sailed Glasgow July 25th 1860 and arrived Otago 25th October 1860.
The Silistria was a ship of 642 tons, built in 1854, and later owned by D. Rose and Co., of Aberdeen, the Silistria made four voyages to Otago, bringing out a total of over 900 passengers from Scotland. On the first two voyages she was commanded by Captain J. Mackay. The first voyage was made in 1860, six years after the ship was launched. She sailed from the Clyde, and arrived at Port Chalmers on the 25th October, making the run in 91 days, port to port.(source :White Wings Sir Henry Brett)

In the 1841 census for Polmont a John McLay, 40, labourer lived with Janet Gaff, 35, who was a sister of Margaret Gaff and they had 7 children aged from 10 years to 7 months. They lived next door to John Johnston Junior, 30, a clerk and his wife Margaret Gaff, 30 and children aged 13 years (born circa 1828) to age 3 months.Their daughter Ann is aged 7 years , born circa 1834. Living next to them, on the other side, was John Johnston, 60, Coal overseer who was John Junior’s father.

Notes for John (Spouse 1)
John Aitken's death certificate (1902) indicates he and Ann had a daughter who was 48 years old, born circa 1854. This is the year John & Ann married and this was the year before birth registration commenced in Scotland so only baptism records possible. No record in Scotland has been found indicating who or where this daughter was born. However the marriage of Margaret Aitken to Archibald McAlister in 1882 shows Margaret’s father to be John Aitken, Surveyor. So Margaret was the first daughter and was born probably before John & Ann Married and so was never baptised in Scotland.
