Memo“Beatrice’s brother, who I called Uncle Gus (Hart), was out here from America, where he was a court recorder, I think this the correct title. He recorded in shorthand all court proceedings. I think he was stationed in New York. He was out here to claim some land, which, he hadn’t paid rates for years. He was successful; he was awarded quite a bit of money, less some amount for a fine for not paying rates. This land was in New Zealand. He was out here when I was pregnant with Phil. He might have been here after Phil was born. He loved Dad’s typewriter and typed a lot in the dining room. He was present at many meals I think, I don’t know where he was staying, possibly the People’s Palace, a cheap place run by Salvation Army”.

MemoGustavus E Hart arrived UK from Sydney, Australia on the 10th of December 1947. The ship was the Orion of the Orient Steam Ship Company. Ports called at on the voyage where Melbourne, Fremantle, Colombo and Port Said. This trip took around 37 days so the departure date from Sydney would have been about 3rd of November 1947.

It is likely that Gustavus departed the USA from San Francisco as there was a regular passenger service from there to Auckland and Sydney. He most likely visited New Zealand before coming to Sydney. Shipping records in the National Library should have a record of his arrival in Sydney probably early in 1947.

On arrival in England Gustavus gave his address, whilst in England, as 18 Mill Street, Sidmouth, Devon. As some of family originated in Devon he was probably visiting family.

MemoGustavus arrives back in the U.S.A. after his trip to Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. after nearly 14 months. As he was then living in California a few more days would be needed to arrive home. Perhaps he visited friends or family in the eastern states before completing his round the world trip!

MemoGustavus returns from Bombay, India departing there on the 1st June 1950. He travelled Cabin class on the Hoegh Silvercrest. The in-bound passenger list notes he lives in Los Angeles and travelled with 2 suitcases. It also notes that he was a U.S. citizen and his passport number was 117099 and that he was born in New Zealand.

Why did he go to India? Perhaps some family went there. certainly shiping arrivals in UK in 1890s show Bray families returning to England. Could these be related a possible area of reseach?

MemoLiving at 1250 Prince Edward Street were Gustavus Hart, his wife Sadie (as recorded) & Rose & Cora Heiges Sarah’s daughters by a previous marriage. Age of each was recorded 50 for Gustavus, actually 52, 47 for his wife and 27 & 23 for the daughters. They were operating a hotel which they owned but had a mortage on the building and the 2 daughters worked there as waitresses.
Sadie and daughters were all born in Pennsylvania as were Sadie’s parents but Gustavaus and his parents are noted as being born in Australia. This is incorrect but all other facts when compared to other known facts such as wife’s previous surname, her age and place of birth and Gustavus’ arrival in USA and naturalisation date are correct. As Gustavus was not born in the USA his arrival in 1898 and the fact that he was naturalised in 1903 were recorded.

This is the only time Gustavus’ occupation is not a reporter or typist. Perhaps this occurred as he had recently married and the hotel business was his wifes.
