Spouses
1Edward James HART , GG Grandfather
Birth Datebef 12 Mar 1837
Birth PlaceSouthleigh, Devon, England
MemoBorn Southleigh from 1851 census but marriage registration gives Colyton, about 4 km away. Colyton is the closet significant town to Southleigh slightly more than half the distance to the next town of Seaton. Colyton was in the Southleigh registration district Cannot be 100% sure that this is the right Edward but all information fits well and no alternative has been found. The only significant issue is the lack of the middle name James on any early information. It is worth noting that Eliza Records father’s name was James.

This Edward is the only Edward HART found born Colyton /Southleigh and he is the only one found in census 1841 and 1851. No other Edward Hart has been found in later census which suggests he had left England.

MemoEdward son of William, a labourer and Eliza of Colyton.
Reside Date30 Mar 18511394 Age: 14

MemoIt is most likely that Edward was an agricultural servant to the Tilke family but this cannot be absolutely sure it was him. It does seem likely though as this Edward is the only possible fit and now other Edwards have been found born Southleigh / Colyton.
Migration Dateca 18571395 Age: 19

Notes for Catherine Jane BRAY
Where or when husband Edward James Hart died has not been positvely confirmed. Most likely found 30 May 1879 in Timaru. From Catherine’s death record of 1933 he was dead at that time. Catherine’s death record also states she has lived in Victoria approximately 63 years. If continuously prior to her death this would mean from around 1870. This is very unlikely as son Gustavus was attending school in Invercargill in 1876. As her daughter’s Ada & Emily did not leave New Zealand, at the same time, it is highly probably that Catherine remained in New Zealand until around 1880. If this is the case she must have resided in Victoria some 7 or 8 years prior to her marriage in 1862 as she and her husband were settled in New Zealand for the birth of daughter Emily.

The accuracy of information on Catherine’s death record is very good which suggested there was someone living in Melbourne who accurately knew this. Further research revealed daughter, Ada, and some of her children arrived in Melbourne around 1914. Further her brother William, a miner, had resided in Victoria since 1854 and her sister Mary Ann as well as her parents William and Catherine arrived around the same time.

No death of husband Edward James was found in Victoria which might suggest she returned to Victoria after Edward’s death which supports the 1879 death previously mentioned.

Possible return to Victoria from New Zealand

Name: Mrs Hart

Arrival Date: 1 Nov 1880
Arrival Port: Melbourne, Australia
Departure Port: Bluff, New Zealand
Ship: Rotoma Nationality: British
Notes for Edward James (Spouse 1)

Death
Nothing definite has been found about when or where he died. Other factors suggest he had left Invercargill by 1871 or he was dead by that date. He was recorded as dead on wife Catherine’s death in 1933.

in NZ

The on-line 1879/353 Hart Edward 39Y (ie born circa 1840) is a possibility but there are two Edward Harts dying in 1879 according to fiche records, namely folio 537 Q2 in Auckland, which is unlikely and folio 814 Q2 in Timaru which is possible. But why the missing entry on-line. The on-line date of 30 May could be either (or both) so this date has been entered as a possible death date and fits with Catherine returning to Victoria, perhaps to be with her brother William and sister Mary Ann. The only thing known is that Catherine’s death record says he was dead before 1933. No death in Victoria found or NSW.

Possible voyage to NZ (ages wrong as is EL !) but perhaps needed permission if under 21 years!
