Notes for Eliza FARQUHAR
The only probable reference to Eliza is contained in the 1841 census where George is shown as having a wife, age 20 and born in England. Her forename is not given so it is not definite that this information relates to Eliza and the census was a year before George & Eliza married. It could even be possible that this was not Eliza.

In 1851 Eliza did not reside with George and couldn’t be found elsewhere so it is likely she had already died. Further if George fathered Marion in late 1850 he didn’t live with Elizabeth Arbuckle at the time of the 1851 census.
Notes for George (Spouse 1)
Is this the right George Scott?

The death record of Marion Scott Walker (NZ 1913) gives her parents as George Scott, “Carpet Pattern designer” and her mother as Elizabeth Arbuckle. The Scottish census has only one George Scott who was a “pattern designer”. Unfortunately no record of birth or marriage of either George nor birth of daughter Marion have been found in the Scottish Parish records.

If George is as follows he also had a daughter Jane and his wife was Elizabeth Wilson, not Arbuckle according to George’s death record. The possibility therefore, assuming there was only one George, is that there were two Elizabeths, the first Elizabeth Wilson was the mother of Jane and was not found in 1851, so likely she had died and the second Elizabeth Arbuckle, resided in Glasgow in 1851 living with her parents and and probably never married George but gave birth to a daughter Marion in 1851.

Elizabeth Wilson’s husband George was a “Muslin” pattern designer on his death certificate whereas Elizabeth Arbuckle’s George is recorded as a “carpet” pattern designer on daughter Marion’s death record. Muslin became a popular fabric around the time of George’s death but there is no reason to think he didn’t design patterns for carpets around the 1850’s when Marion was born.

The information following summarises the census and death information of the only George Scott, pattern designer found.

census 1841
George, age 30? is pattern drawer and print cutter, his wife is recorded as Mrs Scott, age 20 born England. They were living at 24 Wilson Street, Glasgow. This is the only census when George is recorded as living with a wife and her forename name is recorded.

census 1851
George, age 30, is pattern designer lodging with Swingston family at 7 Croy Place Glasgow (St Enoch).

census 1861
George, a pattern drawer, 44 lives with daughter (corrected as originally entered as wife) Jane, 19 in Shawhill Street Pollokshaws in Renfrewshire. Staying with them was a grandson Archibald McRine (hard to read surname), age 1. A grandson suggest there may have been another daughter.

census 1871
George, 54 lived at 16 Shawhill St., Eastwood in Renfrewshire with daughter Jane age 29.

census 1881
George, pattern designer, 64 and his daughter Jane ,40 with grandchildren James 4 and George Wilson (Scott) 2 months at Eastwood town of Pollokshaws in Renfrewshire. George & James were sons of Jane, fathers unknown.

Death
George’s death is recorded as follows

1889 SCOTT GEORGE M 72 PATRICK GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 646/03 0016

The death record gives his wife was Elizabeth Wilson not Arbuckle. This information was given by a nephew Abraham Scott.
The death record also indicates Georges parents were William Scott & Mary Logan.
