Birth PlaceFalkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland
MemoNo record of James' birth can be found but it appears that James Birth/Baptism transcribed as Jane. However the original record looks at first glance JANE but the “N” could be a lazy “M” and there appears to be another letter after the “E” that could be an “S”. There is nothing in records to indicate baby is male or female. This birth is almost certainly that of James, as there is no record of a Jane after that date. See baptism record.

Memo"James's birth cannot be found whereas the other siblings can. Jane Aitken, (no gender quoted) born in 1838, has a birth/christening entry in the church records, but no entry for James, as he would have to have been a twin as marriage, parentage, census and immigration evidence indicates that he was born in 1838. As Jane does not appear 3 years after her birth on the 1841 census sheet but James appears for the first time, aged 3, it is believed that the Jane birth entry was really James.
