Marr MemoThis marriage was at the Cathedral. John was 22, a chandler and Mary aged 19. John lived at 13 Violet Street Hulme and Mary at 59 Welcomb Street Hulme. John's father was Thomas , a Striller? and Mary's was William, a warehouse man.
This is the most likely Mary to marry John Thorp although their ages are a little young and Mary in the 1851 census is given as being born in Derby or perhaps it is Denton which is close to Ashton it is not very clear. The occupation Chandler of John could be considered a provision agent as shown in later census but directed more specifically to a shipping supplier. Hopefully more research will determine if this assumption is correct.
If the wife of John Thorp wasn’t Mary Whitney then a Mary Mather who Married a John Thorpe in 1855 in Ashton upon Lyne might be an interesting possibility as Mather is the surname of Thomas Whaite’s third wife Amy Malvina Mather.
