Memo"My Grandmother was born Mary Walker married, McBride when she was in the forties. She always fancied my grandfather and wanted to be Mrs. Thomas H. Aitken as she wanted to be Mary McBride. She got both eventually, when she was over 60. Grandfather was over 65. They were lonely and my mother suggested they got married. She had a home in Regents Park or Bankstown. They used to talk about their youth until 2 AM. She had wanderlust until she married grandfather. She used to travel steerage and get what she wanted. She became settled when she became Mary Aitken and lived long after Tom died. She used to walk over the Harbour Bridge to Mosman from the Salvation Home, for gentle women at Burwood. I think she got a train from Burwood to Wynyard. She was short of cash. The only way she could visit my mother was walk. Although Mum used to pay her transport costs, she wouldn't accept her fare both ways.
This was when she was old. She was tiny. She was Tom Aitken's 3rd wife."
